Flow meter definition4/29/2024 ![]() View our DUC clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter for more details about this technology. Coriolis meters are generally considered the most repeatably accurate flow meters available today. ![]() This is a volumetric flow meter that needs bubble or minute particles within the liquid flow. Clamp-on flow meters are also a great choice for larger line sizes as they typically cost less than an inline flow meter in the same diameter. Definition: An ultrasonic flow meter can be defined as, a meter that is used to measure liquid velocity with ultrasound to analyze the volume of liquid flow. Common application areas for this type of flow meter include power plants, water and wastewater processes, facility management, chemical and petrochemical industries, and the food and beverage industries. Because these ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters utilize technology that does not require it to be installed within the process line, they can be easily added on to an existing process with no disruption to the process. These types of flow meters require a pipe that has ultrasonic conductive properties, like steel or plastic. Stationary clamp-on flow meters typically have a more permanent manner of adhering the transducers to the outside of the pipe. They typically feature a transducer that is held to the pipe area with a quick release system and calculation/display electronics. Portable clamp-on flow meters are models that are easily removed from the installation and can be quickly used in other areas of the application or other application areas because they are temporarily installed on the outside of the pipe and are not integrated into the piping system itself. The electromagnetic flow meter is also known as the magmeter.Clamp-on flow meters are typically ultrasonic flow meters, which utilize transit-time technology. It is heavy and extremely large in size. There are many flow meter types, each with its own working principle. The electromagnetic flow meter has low accuracy. Flow meters measure a fluids volume or mass to determine the flow rate. The extremely low flow rate can also be measured by the electromagnetic flow meter.ĭisadvantages of Electromagnetic Flow Meter. The electromagnetic flow meter can measure the flow of slurries, greasy, and can handle the corrosive fluid liquids. The output is uninfluenced by the varying characteristic of liquid like viscosity, pressure, temperature etc.The output voltage of the electromagnetic flow meter is proportional to the flow rate of the liquid. If the magnetic field around the pipe remains constant than the generating voltage is proportional to the velocity of the fluid. L – length of conductor = diameter of pipe m ![]() Where, v – velocity of conductor (flow) m/s The voltage is induced across the coil because of the flow of the liquid. The arrangement is similar to the conductor moving in the magnetic field. This electromagnet induces the magnetic field around the pipe. The electromagnet is placed around the insulated pipe. The insulated pipe carries the liquid whose flow needs to be measured. The electromagnetic flow meter consists the electrically insulated pipe made of fibre. Electrodes placed opposite to each other, magnetic coil placed on the pipe for generating the magnetic field etc. Construction of Electromagnetic Flow Meter The magnitude of the voltage depends on the velocity of the liquid. The liquid acts as a conductor and when passes through the magnetic field induce the voltage across the coil. The magnetic field is generated by the coil which is mounted on the external metallic body of the pipe. The magnitude of the voltage is directly proportional to the velocity, length of the conductor and the strength of the magnetic field. This law states that when the conductive liquid passes through the magnetic field, the voltage induces across the conductor. The electromagnetic flowmeter works on the principle of Faraday’s Law of electromagnetic induction. Working Principle of Electromagnetic Flow Meter ![]() ![]() The electromagnetic flowmeters work on the principle that the obstruction is created in the path of the liquid and the pressure of the liquid induces the voltage across the coil. ![]()
